Music of the Spheres, also known as Musica Universalis (Universal Music), or Harmony of the Spheres, is an ancient philosophical concept that regards proportions in the movements of celestial bodies as a form of music.

Purportedly, the harmonic structure of music was discovered by Pythagoras about the fifth century BC. When he found that harmonic music is expressed in exact numerical ratios of whole numbers, he concluded that music was the ordering principle of the universe. It connects all things and points to a reasoning intelligence behind it. "This idea of 'the music of the spheres' runs through the history of Western civilization with an extraordinary consistency, even up to the twentieth century. At first it was meant literally, later poetically. Either way, music was seen more as a discovery than a creation, because it relied on pre-existing principles of order in nature for its operation."

"In sound itself, there is a readiness to be ordered by the spirit and this is seen at its most sublime in music." —Max Picard
